HISTORY OF HYPNOSIS

Hypnotherapy is as old as the human race. The phenomena known as hypnosis has existed since the beginning of recorded history, as found in the folklore of ancient cultures. It has been and continues to be associated with religion, magic, the supernatural and the occult.

For this reason it is no wonder that the general public's attitude toward hypnosis is one of misunderstanding, antagonism and fear.

Within modern healthcare times and attitudes towards hypnotherapy are changing. 'Hypnosis Goes Mainstream' Wall St Journal 7/10/2003. This article detailed the widespread acceptance of hypnosis in fractures, cancer, burns, pain relief, gastrointestinal disorders, childbirth, haemophilia, phobias, traumas, etc.

Many hospitals in Europe and the United States now have staff hypnotherapists. Misconceptions and fear can be a hindrance to the practice of hypnotherapy; a working condition is simply 'focussed attention'. Many common everyday activities illustrate this, like being wrapped up in a book, or being 'entranced' by music or films.

HYPNOTIC SUSCEPTIBILITY

It is well documented that hypnotisability is highest when a subject is strongly motivated to be hypnotised and has a positive attitude towards hypnosis. Anyone with an adequate attention span, average intelligence and a cooperative attitude can be hypnotised.

POWER OF THE HYPNOTIST

Most of the general public believe the hypnotist has power or can exert his will over a subject. In reality this is far from true, hypnosis always requires the cooperation of a client, the hypnotist functions purely as a guide or facilitator while the client remains totally in control.

In effect all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. No one can ever be made to do anything against their will especially regarding their morals or values. Hypnotherapy within this practice is based on promoting the rapid accomplishment of precise cognitive and behavioural goals.
